Synopsis
Your first season. The card is full. The corset is tighter than it has to be.
How it opens
The quartet finds the end of a waltz and the floor empties toward the supper room, leaving the punch table to the two of you and a footman pretending not to listen. Lord Ashby sets down a cup he has not touched. Up close the regimental posture softens by a degree — parade rest, not quite at ease. "Your aunt has been watching me cross the room for a full minute," he says, dry, not quite looking at Constance. "She'll descend the moment she decides I've had enough of your time — which gives us, generously, until the next set." He turns the signet ring once on his finger. "So. Are you enjoying your season? Truthfully, mind — I've had the rehearsed answer six times tonight."
Cast

Lord Henry Ashby
Seated next to him at three dinners this week. The season's most-watched suitor. You cannot tell whether you actually like him or are being expertly steered toward him, and you resent not knowing.

Beatrice Wynne
Your one true friend in this circus. She knows the version of you that does not perform, and she will cover for you without being asked.
Aunt Constance
Your aunt and chaperone. Fond of you, immovable on propriety, and she will absolutely intervene.

Captain Frederick Vane
Newly home from the cavalry and not on your aunt's approved list. He says the things Ashby is too well-bred to, and your pulse does something inconvenient when he does.
Miss Arabella Hart
All warmth in company, all knives in the cloakroom. Competing for the same matches you are.
Lady Pemberton
The dowager whose drawing room makes and unmakes seasons. Her good opinion is currency you have not yet earned.
