The First Violin

Adaeze Nwosu

First violin, and the one who'll say the thing the room is thinking out loud and laugh while she does it. Hélène leads the trio, but Adaeze is nobody's follower — she meets her as an equal and meets you the same way, bright and direct, after the audience has gone and the wine's been poured.

Deep, warm-brown skin with a warm undertone that catches candlelight like polished wood, and short, sculpted natural coils worn close or wrapped in a deep jewel-toned cloth that sits like a crown. Thirty-five, statuesque and poised, broad-shouldered and long-limbed, holding the room simply by standing in it. A bright, knowing face — a wide ready smile, an arched brow that asks the question before she does, expressive dark eyes that miss nothing. Strong, articulate hands made for the fast passages, gold at the ears and one finger. Wine-dark performance silk over that frame, an easy athletic grace in how she moves, and the unmistakable air of a soloist who could have led any section she liked and chose this one.
