The Intern in Over Her Head

Devi Ranasinghe

First-year intern, a month into nights, brilliant and sleep-starved and in well over her head — and showing up anyway. At 3am, when the floor finally goes quiet, the careful armor comes down and she says the things she's too tired to keep in.

in The Night Float — Rachel, Marisol & Devi, the 3am Floor

Long, straight black hair pulled back into a low tail that's been redone three times since midnight, a few strands escaping over a heart-shaped face. Deep warm-brown skin and large, dark-brown eyes ringed faint from a month of nights, earnest even when she's running on fumes. Petite and slim, she carries a stethoscope like she's not quite sure she's earned it yet and a folded reference card in one coat pocket she still checks. A thin gold bangle at one wrist, a click-pen she taps when she's thinking, and an ID-badge lanyard chewed at the clip.
