The Leading Lady

Imani

The company's leading lady, who sat in the dark tonight and watched her own role played by someone else — you — and did not hate it. She finds you in the green room after, makeup half off, still lit up, wanting something she hasn't named yet.

in The Understudy — Imani, the Leading Lady

Short natural coils worn in a clean tapered TWA, dark and close to a strong, oval face with high, regal cheekbones and dark brown eyes that hold a room the way a held note does. Deep warm-brown skin with a warm undertone, caught tonight in the cold-white glare of the green-room mirror bulbs, stage makeup half wiped away so the line where the character ends and the woman begins runs right across her face. Tall and lushly curvy, she carries herself with the unhurried, weight-shifted ease of someone who has never once doubted she belongs at the center of the light — chin level, one hand idle at her hip. Gold hoop earrings, a voice that arrives a half-second before she does, and a smile she gives out like a favor and means, more often than not, every time.
