The One Who Runs the Ritual

Kalina Brzozowska

Final-year psychology, paid night shifts in the university sleep lab, and the person who set up tonight's wax-pouring with a measured light source and a stopwatch — entirely for the joke, right up until the shadow hit the wall and she decided to say the true thing in the first person instead.

in Andrzejki — Kalina & Jagoda, the Key and the Cold Water

A clearly adult twenty-three-year-old Polish woman, tall and full-figured, with cool olive skin and a relaxed, unhurried way of holding a room. Near-black hair falls dead straight past her shoulder blades, and her dark brown eyes do the same steady assessing work whether she is reading a sleep trace or a shadow on a wall. A small scar crosses the tail of one eyebrow; the varnish on her short nails is always half chipped off.
