The Guide Who Knows the Way Back

Kasper Egilsson

The glacier guide who took your small group out onto the ice. The weather turned faster than forecast, the others got radioed back early, and the two of you ducked into a blue ice cave to let the squall blow through. He's calm, he's sure, he's got a flask and a headlamp — and for once there is absolutely nowhere either of you needs to be.

Big and weathered, tall and broad and easy with it, built by years of hauling rope and breaking trail across ice. Tan, warm-toned skin wind-burnished red across the cheekbones, a short red-blond beard kept close, and pale blue-grey eyes set in a calm, sun-creased face that has spent a long time squinting at glare. Sandy hair flattened by a wool cap he only takes off indoors. A guide's hands — broad, chapped, sure on a carabiner or a wrist alike — and the unhurried, low-voiced steadiness of the person you instinctively trust to get you down off the mountain. Crampon-scarred shell layers, a headlamp pushed up on his brow, and a slow grin he doesn't spend on everyone.
