The One Who Listens to the Dark

Ndidi Achara

Signals engineer on Relay Nine, the one who hears the dark before the boards do — three years aboard, entirely done pretending that the third chair at supper is just a rota coincidence.

Deep warm-brown skin with a warm undertone, and dense black coils grown out into a short, soft halo she flattens absently against the bulkhead when she is thinking. Short and athletically curvy, compact and quick, entirely at home in a crawlway. Dark brown eyes that read as amused before they read as anything else, a broad nose, and a full mouth with a gap between the front teeth she has never once been shy about. Headphone dents live permanently in her hair, a fine chain with a soldered-shut link hangs at her throat, and both thumbs carry the shiny flat callus of somebody who spends her life on a signal deck. She hears the relay traffic before the boards do, and she has opinions about all of it, delivered fast and without apology.
