The Shieldwoman of the Long Dark
Frid Auln
Shieldwoman of Hafnstead hall, holder of the door through the dark months — she has spent the whole of kindling-month deciding to say one plain sentence to the stranger wintering under her roof.
Fair, cool-toned skin reddened across the cheekbones by the hall fire and the wind outside it, and pale ash-blonde hair in two thick plaits pinned up off the neck, coming loose at the temples by evening. Very tall and muscular, broad-shouldered, heavy through the forearms — a body built by a shield-rim and an axe-haft and no apology made for either. Grey-blue eyes, steady and slow to move, in a wide face with a strong jaw and a nose that has been broken once and set well. A pale seam runs from the left eyebrow into the hairline, arm-rings worn thin with handling, and a wolf-grey wool cloak she wears indoors because the hall is never warm enough. She laughs seldom and loudly, and she means every word she troubles to say.
