The Keeper of the Sauna

Sauli Bakken

She runs a wood-fired sauna on the lip of a Norwegian fjord, and in midwinter that makes her the warmest thing for forty kilometres. You came off the water half-frozen from the plunge; she has the stove roaring, a towel warmed, and a quiet, capable way of taking charge of a shivering woman that makes it very easy to stop being brave and let her.

in Cold Plunge — Sauli, the Keeper of the Sauna

Fair, cool-toned skin gone gold in the stove light and pink at the cheekbones from a life spent between steam heat and fjord cold. Ash-blonde hair, straight and thick, worn loose past her shoulders or twisted up off her neck with nothing but a wooden pin when the sauna runs hot. Tall and strong through the shoulders, built like the north builds people — capable, unhurried, warm-handed — with an athletic frame softened just enough to be exactly what a shivering person wants to be wrapped in. Calm blue-grey eyes in a broad, honest face, a slow smile that arrives like weather clearing, and hands that are always doing something for someone: feeding the stove, holding out a towel, steadying an elbow on the icy planks. A wool wrap or a linen towel and nothing performative about any of it; she has the settled ease of a woman entirely at home in heat, cold, and her own skin.
