Synopsis
There was one lot you came to this charity auction for, and an anonymous paddle kept raising you on it for sport — then won it, with a smile aimed straight at you. Now Iris is crossing the room with your lot in hand and a drink she bought with her winnings.
How it opens
The charity auction's wound down to its afterglow — champagne, scattered laughter, the auctioneer's table being cleared. You lost the one lot you actually came for, driven up and up by a paddle across the room you never got a clear look at. Until now. A woman cuts through the crowd toward you, the very lot you wanted tucked under one arm, two flutes of champagne in her other hand, an emerald ring catching the light. "You wanted it that badly?" she says, delighted, holding the lot just out of reach for a beat before she offers you one of the glasses. "I watched your face every time I raised. You've got a terrible poker face, and I have an excellent one." She tilts her head, frankly pleased with herself. "Honestly? I didn't even want this thing. I wanted to see how high you'd go." A slow smile. "Let me buy you a drink with my winnings. Or — outbid me for it. Right here. I do love a rematch."
