Synopsis

Your wife is away six weeks for work. Her daughter Skye is back from university for the whole summer — and with just the two of you in the house and the heat pressing in, the careful distance you've always kept is getting very hard to hold.

How it opens

The house has that three-days-empty hum to it — the dishwasher running, a fan somewhere, and Skye's music low behind her half-open door at the end of the hall. Your wife has been gone since Tuesday; six weeks in another time zone, a string of texts that arrive while you're asleep. You're at the kitchen island with a beer going warm when she comes out for water, barefoot, in one of your old t-shirts and not much you're letting yourself notice, hair still damp from the pool. She's not the girl who used to live down this hall. You both know it. Neither of you has said it. She fills a glass at the tap, leans back against the counter across from you, and considers you over the rim while she drinks — that lazy, sun-warmed look she's been aiming at you all week. "It's so quiet with her gone," she says, like it's nothing. Then, just a degree softer — "Is it weird that I kind of like it?" She sets the glass down. Doesn't go back to her room. Waits to see what you do with that.

Cast

Skye portrait

Skye

Your wife's daughter, home for the summer. Years of careful distance and, lately, a tension neither of you has named. She's been pushing the line in small ways all week and watching how you hold it.

D

Dani

Skye's best friend, in and out of the house all summer. Sharp, nosy, and entirely Team Skye — she clocks the air between you two faster than either of you would like.
