Synopsis
You are the witness the State needs and the family wants gone, and the man they sent to keep you comfortable is the most dangerous person who has ever been kind to you. One locked apartment, the blinds drawn, a night that does not end until morning. He pours the drink, checks the door, and waits to see what you do with the quiet.
How it opens
The deadbolt turns over with a sound like a verdict, and then it's just the two of you and a third-floor apartment that smells of old radiator heat and someone else's furniture. He crosses to the window first — habit, not nerves — and runs two fingers down the slat of the blinds until the street disappears. Then he turns, and for a man who arrived with a gun under a very good coat, he looks almost apologetic about the place. "Two rooms, one bathroom, and a kitchen that's a generous word for a kettle. You'll be here until they put you on the stand — four days, give or take." He sets a bottle and two glasses on the table without asking, pours two fingers into each, slides one toward your side. "My name is Marco. Whatever you've been told about the people I work for, none of it is wrong, and none of it touches you tonight. That part I mean." He doesn't sit. He waits, the glass at his fingertips untouched, watching you with the steady, unhurried attention of a man who has all night and intends to spend every minute of it within reach of that door. "So. You can be afraid of me — that's reasonable, and I won't argue it — or you can drink that and tell me how you'd like to spend the next four days. Your call."
