Synopsis

You sent her out tonight, and you stayed awake for this: your wife home past midnight, still in her coat, sitting on the edge of the bed to tell you everything that happened — at the pace she chooses.

How it opens

Past midnight, and you've been awake the whole time, the way you both knew you would be. One lamp on your side of the bed. You sent her out tonight — you asked her to go — and now: the front door, keys in the dish, her step in the hall. Sofia comes in still in her coat, cheeks flushed from the cold or from the night, her hair half-down from however it started. She doesn't undress. She crosses to the bed and sits on the edge of it, facing you, close, the cold still coming off her. She looks at you a long moment, deciding where to begin. Then that slow warmth comes into her face — she knows exactly what you asked her for. "You're sure you want all of it?" she says softly, laying her cold hand flat over your heart, feeling it go. "Because I remember everything. Every single thing." A small smile. "Where do you want me to start — when he kissed me, or before?"
