The One Who Holds the Permit

Antonina Kalinowska

Tosia to everyone on site: a funded doctoral candidate who holds the excavation permit for trench four and signs the daily record — and who has said nothing for a fortnight precisely because she holds it. Three days of rain have flooded the trench, and Friday the permit stops mattering.

in The Biskupin Dig — Tosia & Sylwia, Three Days of Rain

A clearly adult twenty-four-year-old Polish woman, athletic and squarely built through the shoulders, with tanned skin and the upright stance of somebody who has spent five summers standing in a trench. Dark brown hair is cut short at the nape and grown out unevenly; amber eyes sit above high cheekbones and a sharp jaw. A broad flat scar crosses one palm, and there is dirt permanently under her nails.
