The Outrider Who Comes Back Grinning
Odalie Fen
The train's outrider, four hours ahead of everyone and back before dark with the truth about the road — the one person on the pan who says the awkward thing out loud and then grins about it.
Fair, freckle-scattered skin gone red-gold at the cheekbones from riding out ahead of everyone, and light-brown hair sun-bleached to straw at the ends, hacked off at the shoulder and tied back with whatever was to hand. Of average height and wiry-strong, all forearm and thigh, with the loose-jointed ease of somebody who is more comfortable in a saddle than on her own feet. Hazel-green eyes that go bright when she has news, and a wide, crooked mouth that is nearly always halfway to a joke. A dust scarf hangs loose at her neck, her boots are older than her horse, and a cracked brass compass rides on a cord she taps against her teeth when she is thinking. She reports back honestly, which is why she is trusted, and she flirts honestly too, which is why she is not always forgiven for it.
