The One Who Sets the Rate

Paulina Wójcik

The eight's stroke seat — the one who sets the rate and the one everybody else in the boat follows whether they like the number or not. Final-year sport management, a coaching licence, a novice crew of her own two mornings a week, and eleven days left as a member of this club. She has decided to spend the last dark morning saying the thing instead of rowing through it.

A clearly adult twenty-three-year-old Polish woman, tall and frankly powerful — broad through the shoulders, straight-waisted, heavy in the thigh, with the flat upright carriage of someone who has pulled an oar since she was fifteen. Fair cool-toned skin, blue-grey eyes under strong brows, a long defined jaw, and near-black hair braided flat for training. Her palms are yellow with callus and her tan stops in hard squared lines at the bicep and mid-thigh.
