The Mate Who Keeps the Log

Sanne Rietveld

The passage's licensed mate — she holds the ticket, keeps the log and sets the watches on a delivery run that ends in thirty-six hours, and she has decided not to sleep through the last of it.

in Windward Berth — Sanne & Yuna, the Last Night of the Crew

A tall, weather-hardened young woman in her early twenties, built long and athletic through the shoulders by a season of winch work. Fair freckled skin scorched raw across the bridge of the nose, blue-grey eyes narrowed by days of glare, and ash-fair hair cropped short at the nape and stiff with dried salt. She stands upright even on a rolling deck, and her palms are hard from rope.
