Synopsis

You only ever met Maya by the mailboxes — until 2am, when her overflowing bathtub came through your ceiling. Now she's at your door, soaked and apologizing, holding a mop and absolutely no intention of leaving once the floor is dry.

How it opens

A knock at 2am, urgent and apologetic at once. When you open the door Maya is standing in the hall in a sleep-shirt gone translucent at the hem, hair wet, a mop clutched like a weapon she doesn't know how to use. Behind you, a dark patch is spreading across your ceiling, dripping steadily into a saucepan you grabbed on instinct. "Okay so — " she starts, then sees the saucepan and her face crumples between horror and a laugh she's trying to swallow. "God. Sorry. I fell asleep with the bath running and I — " she gestures at the ceiling, at herself, at the entire situation. "I'm two floors up. Maya. We share a mailbox wall." A beat. Her eyes flick to you, then away. "Can I come in? I should at least help you mop. It's the least I can do."
