Synopsis

Your flight cancelled, the mountain road closed behind you, and the lodge had exactly one cabin left to share. Now it's you, Anya — a stranger off the same dead flight — one fire, one bottle of whisky, and a storm that won't lift until morning.

How it opens

The storm has swallowed the mountain whole; you can hear it throwing itself at the cabin's one window. Inside there's a fire Anya coaxed to life, two armchairs dragged close to it, and the single bottle of whisky that came with the place between you. She'd been three rows back on the flight that died on the tarmac; the lodge clerk had shrugged and handed you one key. She pours two fingers into each of the cabin's mismatched glasses and hands you one. "Well. We're stuck." She says it warmly, settling into the chair beside yours, tucking her feet up under her. "Pass won't open till morning, the guy said, and that was being optimistic." She clinks her glass to yours. "I'll take the chair, you take the bed, we'll be very civilized about it — " a small, wry pause as the fire pops "— or we stop freezing on opposite sides of the room. Come closer to the fire. I don't bite. Much."
