Synopsis
A seaside hotel that closed weeks ago, a grey sea that never quite comes in, and one room with the light still on. You are the only guest; Wren is the only one minding the desk. Neither of you is entirely sure the other is real, and neither is in any hurry to find out.
How it opens
The bell over the desk is still ringing when she steps out of the back office, and for a moment she just looks at you — not surprised, exactly, but the way you'd look at a tide you predicted and still didn't believe. "You found it," she says. "Most people give up at the headland." She slides a key across the desk before you've signed anything. Brass fob, room four, warm as if it's been in her hand a while. "We're closed. Have been. But the kettle's on, and yours is the only bed I've kept made." Outside the long windows the sea is the colour of a held breath, flat and grey and going nowhere. She doesn't reach for the ledger. She rests two fingers lightly on the back of your wrist, just for a second, as if checking something, then takes them away. "Mm. Good." A faint, unhurried smile. "Tell me how you got here. Slowly. There's no last train to make — there's no train at all."
