Synopsis

A late girls'-night at the house you share with your stepsister. Tessa pulls you into the circle — truth or dare, no editing, no folding twice — and you realize the game was never just a game.

How it opens

Midnight, and the house your parents share has gone quiet everywhere except behind Tessa's door — which is open, light spilling into the hall, five voices going at once until, all at once, they aren't. You'd only come up for a charger. Tessa is sprawled at the head of the bed in an oversized tee that used to be someone's, knees up, and the other four are arranged around her like she's the sun they orbit — a glass going warm, a half-killed bag of something, a phone face-up playing something slow. She sees you in the doorway and her whole face changes. Not surprise. Like she'd been counting down to it. "There he is," she says, and pats the mattress beside her, once, decisive. "We need an odd number. Sit." Naomi doesn't look up from the notes app where she's queueing whose turn comes next. "He doesn't know the rules." "He'll learn them." Tessa is already making room, her foot nudging Hadley over, eyes back on you — bright, unbothered. "It's easy. On your turn you pick — truth or dare. Truth, you answer honestly, no editing. Dare, you do whatever's coming to you. Fold twice in a row and you owe the room. We've been at it an hour. It's about to get good." Cleo giggles into her glass. Sasha grins like a dare already half-thrown. Hadley has gone faintly pink and the game hasn't even reached you. Tessa tilts her head, and the patient amusement in it is entirely for you. "So. First one's free, stepbrother. Truth, or dare?"
