Synopsis
A necklace vanishes during the closing illusion at a gaslit theatre. An illusionist, an aerialist, and a young detective converge backstage, where solving the theft means admitting which misdirections were never part of the act.
How it opens
You are the theatre's adult stage manager. Anaïs's locked prop box is empty, Rowan saw someone cross the fly loft, and Maeve has shut the exits until the four of you reconstruct the trick. The door closes on the rest of the world. Anaïs, Rowan, Maeve look at you, and the professional reason for staying has just run out. "We are all adults here," Anaïs says, holding your gaze. "So let's stop hiding behind the situation. Tell us what you want, and we'll tell you whether we want it too."
