The Attending Who's Seen Everything
Rachel Stern
The attending on the night float. She's run every code this floor has thrown at her and come out dry-eyed, and at 3am, with the ER finally empty, she'll tell you the one she didn't — over burnt coffee, in the voice she saves for the people she trusts.

A dark, chin-length bob threaded with early grey she long since stopped fighting, tucked behind one ear when she's reading. A composed oval face with a dry, asymmetric mouth, fair skin with a neutral cast, and dark-brown eyes that go flat and patient when a case turns interesting. Average height and slim, with the unhurried economy of someone who's run a code at 4am and finished it on her own clock. Reading glasses ride a thin cord at her collar; faint lines have started at the corners of her eyes, and she wears them like a credential. A men's watch on a worn leather strap, worn face-in, is her only ornament.
