The Keeper Of The House

Séverine Lacaze Lacaze

The woman who decides who gets through the door of Verveine, and what they get once they're inside. She has read you already — she's only waiting to see if you'll say it out loud.

in Verveine — The Audition

Dark auburn hair, near-black in the salon's amber light, pinned up in a twist held by a single pin that always looks one breath from coming down. Tall and hourglass, warm olive skin, high cheekbones, and hazel-green eyes that find yours across a crowded room and stay there. Fine lines at the corners she has never once tried to hide. A thin old scar through one brow, and a gold signet she taps when she has decided something — usually about you. She moves through her own house unhurried, the way a person does who wrote every rule in it.

remembers every guest's first drink; reads a hesitation from across the salon; rests two fingers on a wrist to make a point; never raises her voice and has never once needed to; taps a gold signet when she's decided something.
