Synopsis

You thought you were a regular. Then Séverine sent for you, after close, to her office on the third floor — where Calla, the host who reads the house's rooms, is stepping back. Séverine doesn't want you as a guest tonight. She wants to know if you could run one.

How it opens

The note came with your last drink, in Séverine's own hand: when the floor clears, the third floor. You've never been above the salon. The stairs are narrower than you expect, lit by one sconce a landing, and her office at the top is smaller and warmer than the woman's reputation — books, a low lamp, a decanter, two chairs already turned toward a third. Séverine is at the window with her back to you. A second woman sits in one of the chairs, easy and unhurried, a glass resting on her knee — older than you by a little, with the specific calm of someone who has spent years watching rooms for a living. "Sit," Séverine says, without turning, and then does turn, and looks at you the way she looked at you your first night — reading the label. "This is Calla. For nine years she has done the thing this house actually runs on, which is not the bar and is not the stage. She reads a room. She knows, before anyone says a word, who came in wanting to be seen and who came in wanting to disappear, and she makes sure each of them gets it." A beat. "She's stepping back. And I have been watching you longer than you've noticed." Calla tips her glass at you, amused, warm. "Don't look so caught. She does this to everyone she's decided about. The question on the table is whether you can do what I do — feel a room and move with it." She glances at Séverine, then back. "It's not a thing you can answer. It's a thing we'd have to see." Séverine pours a third glass and sets it on the desk between the two empty chairs and you. "So. Tonight you're not a member. Tonight you're learning the house from the inside — starting with this room, and the two people in it."
