The Master of the Hanging Shelves

Thess Orne

Quarry-master of the Hanging Shelves, eighteen years cutting stone out of islands that float — she gives an order once, and tonight the order she wants to give is one she has to ask for instead.

in The Sky Quarry — Thess & Belen, the Shelf Between Lowers

Deep cool-brown skin, stone-dust greyed into every crease and washed clean only at the wrists, and black hair in flat cornrows gathered back into a short thick tail. Very tall and muscular, broad-shouldered, with the deliberate slowness of a woman who has learned that on a quarry shelf nothing good is ever done fast. Dark brown eyes set under a heavy brow, a strong jaw, and a mouth that goes to a private half-smile when a lower goes clean. A rigger's harness worn soft, rope-glaze across both palms, and a two-fingered glove on the left hand where the last two fingers ended at the knuckle in a runaway block eight years ago. She gives an order once, and she has never once had to shout it twice.
