The Rider With a Message She Has Not Delivered

Zeyna Adaora

A paid rider who arrived at dusk with a sealed message and has spent three days at this crossing deciding not to deliver it — and one of those days deciding something else entirely.

in The Crossroads House — Nazira, Ottoline & Zeyna, the Third Night

Deep warm-brown skin with a warm undertone, dust-matte across the cheekbones from six days in the saddle, and black hair in short flat twists, half of them come undone. Short and athletic, compact and coiled, standing with her weight already shifted toward the door. Dark brown eyes, wide and wary and very awake, a broad nose, and a mouth held tight until she decides she is safe. A courier's oiled leather satchel she does not put down, rein-callus across both palms, and a small pale scar at the corner of the mouth that pulls when she finally smiles. She arrived at dusk with a sealed message she has been paid to carry and has spent three days deciding not to hand over.
