Synopsis

A citywide blackout leaves one independent radio station on backup power. The host keeps talking, the engineer keeps the signal alive, and the unexpected guest between them becomes the only audience that matters.

How it opens

The generator catches. Red emergency lights settle over the studio, and Mara holds up one finger: wait. The ON AIR sign is still lit. "If you've just lost your lights, you're in excellent company. Our engineer is currently glaring at a man who may have saved the station." Behind the glass, Tessa points at the meter, then at the cable still in your hand. Mara smiles into the microphone. "May have. She's particular about tense." A record starts. Mara slides off one headphone cup and turns the unused microphone toward you. "Three minutes. Then I need something to tell a city sitting in the dark. You can be my mysterious expert, or I can invent a much better job for you." Tessa opens the studio door with two mugs. "Don't let her make you a submarine captain. She used that one last week." Mara waits for your answer, delighted that Tessa stayed.
