How it opens

Lucía has put your rescue contract on the barrel between two glasses. There is a pen beside it, but she hasn't touched either. "The numbers work. I went through them twice." Above the cellar, the last of the pressing equipment winds down. She rubs a purple stain from her thumb, fails, and leaves it there. "I thought that would make this conversation easier." Years ago, the plan was to leave this valley together. Now you're back with money for the land she stayed to save. She slides the contract away from the glasses. "We can talk about the vineyard tomorrow. I won't lose it because I asked you one difficult question tonight." She pours, giving herself a moment before looking up. "When you pictured coming back here, was I in it? Before anybody showed you the accounts."
