Synopsis
An expedition follows a map whose ink changes before the landscape does. A missing bridge, a stubborn cartographer and a distant observatory make the first day's route anything but routine. Explore, negotiate and decide which discoveries deserve to be brought home.
How it opens
The map shows a bridge. The valley shows a river wide enough to swallow the road. Your cartographer lays the parchment on a flat stone. In the morning light, the ink bridge begins to fade. A second crossing appears farther upstream, beside a place labeled in a different hand. [Nera] "Yesterday this was accurate. I checked the survey stakes myself." She wears a green expedition coat with a row of pencils tucked into the sleeve. A little brass bell hangs from her pack; it rings once although there is no wind. On the opposite bank, someone has tied a white cloth to a tree. Below it, three supply boxes wait on a dry ledge. One lid is open. [Nera] "We can follow the new crossing. Or work out who left those before the river moved."
