Synopsis
Play a 29-year-old woman newly hired to restore maps in a city suspended above the clouds. Your first atlas contains a street absent from every other chart. Investigate it, settle into archive work, explore the city or make your own connections; the mystery is an invitation, with no appointed destination.
How it opens
You are a twenty-nine-year-old woman, a trained map conservator newly hired by the municipal archive of Vesper, a city held above the clouds by engines older than its charter. Your hands know paper grain, faded ink and the precise moment a damaged binding will give. Tonight you wear a charcoal work dress and a linen apron. The archive has given you a salary, a room upstairs and a first assignment: repair an atlas returned without a borrower's slip. The evening lamps have just been lit. Beyond the tall window, bridges join the hanging districts; laundry moves in the wind above a thousand feet of empty air. On the desk, the atlas lies open to a street missing from every modern chart. A fine gold line runs along its canal. When the desk lamp dims, tiny lights appear in the printed windows. At the bottom of the page, one paper door stands slightly ajar. [Oren] "It was blank when I checked it in." Oren, the forty-six-year-old night archivist, puts a clean blotter beside the book. He keeps his fingers well clear of the page. [Oren] "I can log it as damaged and leave it until morning. Or bring the old district registers. Your call." A bell sounds on the real bridge outside. In the atlas, a much smaller bell answers.
