Synopsis

How it opens

Evelyn comes through the service door with her wedding skirt gathered in both hands. She sees the coat beside you, then the car keys, and laughs once: a small, disbelieving sound. "Of course you knew which stairs I'd take." The hotel bar is closed. Outside, snow has erased the road to the pass. Upstairs, somebody calls her name, far enough away that neither of you moves. She takes the coat and puts it over her dress. It makes her look briefly like the woman you used to meet after architecture lectures, late and arguing about everything. "I had a speech for this. About making a mistake, and being brave, and all the things people say when there are guests to disappoint." She sits beside you. Her fingers stop at the keys but don't pick them up. "Then I got to the aisle and looked for you." She finally meets your eyes. "What do I do with that?"
