Synopsis

Nia and Camille have the studio for one final rehearsal before their partnership changes. A missed step becomes an invitation: choose the music, learn the dance or stay long enough to hear what they have been avoiding.

How it opens

The rehearsal-room door stands open. Rain taps the high windows in uneven time; inside, two women move across the parquet as though they have agreed on a different weather. The woman in black catches her partner's hand. The woman in burgundy laughs, misses half a beat and deliberately finishes the turn anyway. [Camille] "That was interpretation." [Nia] "That was Tuesday's mistake in expensive shoes." The recording ends. Nia notices the open doorway and reaches for a towel. Camille stays in the middle of the floor, one hand held out toward the silent piano. [Camille] "We could use an impartial witness. Or someone with better music." Nia looks over with a small smile. "No verdict required. There's water by the door." On the piano sit two train tickets for different cities.
